Where the darkness turns toward Light ✨

Last week I started watching the series Once Upon a Time again. I think this is my favorite series and story. It magnifies (in my memory) many elements from well-known fairy tales with realistic characters that gain more nuance and depth as the story progresses.

One of the things that appeals to me so much is the clear, positive growth of the ‘villains’. You not only learn how they became that way, but also see how they can change. I find that hopeful and a beautiful reflection of human growth, and of the fact that salvation is always possible, with the right help.

Although Emma is called the ‘Savior’, it is abundantly clear that the power of salvation lies precisely in the community: helping and carrying each other.

The complex relationships in the series also confront the characters with themes of forgiveness and offering new opportunities so that people can grow in a positive way. There are always consequences for behavior that is consistent for the community as a whole. This is especially evident in Regina. She started out as a gentle woman, but became personally vengeful due to the manipulation of her power-hungry mother and great loss, which ultimately led her to follow the same path as her mother.

Throughout the seasons, you see how her love for Henry (which makes her vulnerable in general but also makes her vulnerable to his influence) helps her make better choices. It is beautiful to follow that process.

Emma, who as a ‘Rescuer’ in principle represents the good, also makes mistakes. She even becomes the ‘Dark One’ for a time. I don’t remember the details, but I think her deepest motivation, despite the dark influences, remained the well-being of her loved ones and the community, even if that consisted of her personal offers.

I find that special and it ties in well with what life as a human being entails.

We all carry both the good of God and the evil of sin within us. The right environment can help us to let the good grow.

I personally believe that real, lasting change is only possible with the help of God. But He works in mysterious ways… and so He also helps those who do not (yet) consciously seek Him, often through His Church and community. Isn't that beautiful? 🌈
